I have a 1990 Ford F350 Crew Cab with the 7.3L Diesel. It has the auto transmission and 2wd. My motor has a blown head gasket and maybe a cracked block. I found a 1996 F250 Super Cab with the 7.3L Diesel. It has a bad transmission and is 4wd. Will the motor swap between the years? How much am I looking at for a mechanic to change the motor? Side note, will the front clip swap over. I know the front headlight supports will need changed but do the body lines match up? Thank you.

Well you can swap anything you want in to your truck but the almighty dollar and his cousins ingenuity and fabrication make the rules. thats what we say in my shop. The diesel in your truck is an older mechanical injection engine. The engine in the 96 is an electronic engine, so just in that you need to swap engine harnesses, which not only power and control the engine, but go all throughout the truck to, you guessed it, the electronically controlled transmission, among other places. So, the short answer is that it is not a direct swap in, there is truckload ( forgive the joke) of changes to be made for the 96 powerstroke engine to work correctly. Oh yeah, the front clip wont swap either, i asked a Ford loving friend of mine. If i can make a suggestion, consider making the change out to a cummins 5.9 L inline 6. Go to Fordcummins.com and that site will give you every answer you need. I have used there adapters for this switch before and I have never had any problems.
