We want to get a wireless connetion from our desktop to our laptop. Can you do this by typing the Serial Number of you modem somewhere on the laptop? If you have to use an SSID how do you find it on a HP desktop? Is there some other way to get a connection without a rouder thing?

a modem is just a device that converts analog signals to digital signals.
If you want to get wireless internet, you need to buy a wireless router and connect that to your modem, and connect your desktop to the router, and connect your laptop through wifi.
Its possible to share the internet from your desktop to your laptop by using a second NIC. You can either use ethernet to share internet from desktop to laptop, or you can buy a wireless adapter for your desktop and use that to broadcast a wireless signal.
But its better if you buy an actual wireless router then doing this.
As for one, w/o a router you have no hardware firewall, making your network very vulnerable to outside threats over the internet.
You can't connect them both like you connect a usb drive to a computer.
