the check engine light just came on in my 2000 hyundai elantra and I know in a couple of cars I had in the past you can pull the p codes by turning the key off and on like 3 times and the code will show up on the dashboard is there anything I can do at home so I don't need to bring it in to have the codes pulled without buying a code reader???

Autozone will sell you a code pulling electronic device for about $80.
It used to be that they would read it for you for free, or lend you the device, but the local auto-mechanics complained and they stopped doing that.
Your Elantra doesn't have this option.
Your need the Hyundai dealer plug your car into "Mother"
Mother always knows best.
Visit your local auto parts store.
They'll read it for FREE.
