First you can use an online file storing service such as Dropbox, and store the information there and then bring it to the desktop. But this can be slow depending on your internet speeds.
The fastest method, however, requires an external drive, either a portable/external hard drive or a flash drive. Just simply plug the drive into the laptop, drag the files onto the external drive, unplug the external drive from the laptop, plug it into the desktop, and drag the files from the external drive to the desktop.
Depends. If both computers have a Wifi card then you can use one to create an "Ad hoc" network {preferably the one with the files but either is fine}...
1 - Open "Network and Sharing Center"
2 - Click on "Set up a new connection or network" {about the middle of the page}
3 - Scroll to the bottom and click on "Set up wireless ad hoc..." then click "Next"
4 - Follow the instructions to do this
Another thing. You don't need to have another Wifi network to do this BUT both computers need to have Wifi cards {internal or external doesn't matter as long as they both have them} for the above method to work. You might even be able to do this if they're both on the same network anyway {Wifi or wired won't matter for this}, especially if it's your own home network where you can leave them both going until the files are all transferred. Just select the folder for Sharing and go through your network to that folder.
Once your Ad Hoc network is set up then select a folder on THAT computer to Share with other users on your new network. Put the files you want to transfer into that folder. Log into the network with your 2nd computer go to the Shared folder and start transferring from it.

There are several ways to go about doing this.
