I just thought id share my view on the whole illegal and legal resident bit with you. First of all let me tell you I haven't had any negative experiences with american citizens yet. As you see I try to improve my English on daily basis and try to be considerate of others. It makes me angry when I hear about the amnesty that some illegal aliens want to come to pass and here is why. I stood in long lines in the rain, I paid about 700 dollars for the processing of paperwork and documents and doctors visit and I waited for weeks for an appointment. Now i do understand why some people try to come into the USA illegally and i believe that the process needs some adjustment on the financial part but honestly don't you think that they are being a bit unfair to the people who go through all the legal steps. My Permanent Resident Card is good for 10 years and than i have to renew it by again waiting in lines filling out mountains of paperwork and paying a lot of money for it. What makes the illegal residents think that they deserve this amnesty?
This is a question for my own curiosity. I do not wish to downgrade or insult anyone but i cant help but feel a little offended by this issue. Please be civil while answering
Update:@tydm than why not enter the US legally, learn the language and obay the laws and become a citizen
@ carlos I am quite happy to be a german citizen I am proud of my herritage and see no reason to change my citizenship since I cant get both citizenships I would have to renounce my german citizenship. I live in the US because my husband doesnt speak german but I want to return to my country on regular bases to visit friends and family so either way I have to pay for visas
Update 3:@Luna thank you for your answer I will most certainly look into that.
@ Sasori and Snitch I am glad you had a good experience in germany. Thank you so much for your kind words

I agree, it is a slap in the face to those good people that have jumped through the many hoops to come to Our Country legally. I also agree that we could revamp the system to make it easier for those good people that would come to our Country legally. That said we can not revamp our system until we secure our borders and enforce the existing laws. Once we have done that then we can sit down and decide how to make it easier for those that would come to our Country legally
yes i wonder the same thing - we did it the "right/legal" way - as you we paid all the fees, filled out all the required forms and waited and waited some more.
And I don't like the idea of amnesty because that sends the message that it is Okay to break the US laws by coming here illegally and at the end you will be awarded with citizenship.... ?!
Because we decided not to get married here in the US (big family abroad, small family in US) - we had to wait 9 months after being married before we legally could live together in the US. But I am proud we did it the right way and think everybody else should do it the right way also or are be deported.
By the way you can have dual US/German citizenship, BUT you need a so called Beibehaltungserklaerung from the German government - which allows you to take on a second citizenship in addition to the German citizenship http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/de/05__Dien...
No. You should be a legal alien resident from the moment you live here. Then, after five years of living here, and not having been outside the country for more than six months, you are eligible to apply for citizenship. I am from Germany myself and have just become an american citizen, but I have dual citizenship because I applied for that with the german government. YOur child is already an American, being born in this country. I married and American and had to apply for a green card which then allowed me to legally live and work in the US. That my husband is American only made it easier for me to have been granted the green card. Without it, married or not, you are considered illegal, unless you have some sort of long term visa. You can only apply for a job if you have the green card in your possession. Most employers, if they are ethical and lawful, will require you to submit a copy of it before they hire you. The applications will ask if you are a citizen or legal alien. Then you have to enter your Alien number. Alles Gute.
YOU should be offended. As you can see from some of the answers, there is a feeling of "entitlement" in the illegal alien camp. They feel that they are above the laws that you followed so carefully. You can't reason with them. They simply refuse to listen. They want what they want when they want it and they just don't care who they hurt. They are criminals and you should never worry about offending criminals.
On an aside, I've visited your country and find Germans intelligent, law-abiding and reasonable people. I hope you enjoy your stay in the US.
After you have been in the US for 4 years you can apply for citizenship. That means that after you become a citizen you don't have to wait in line every 10 years to renew your Residency over and over again and spend the thousands of dollars that it costs now.
My suggestion for you is to become a citizen and then you will be able to be all you can be and do everything that the constitution allows you to do as a citizen of the United States.
Good Luck!
Hey Purple Butterfly. My husband and I spent 2 years in Germany in 1975-76. It's a beautiful country and I wouldn't want to give it up either.
We were in Bayreuth, just off the Chech border. We lived in public housing and found the people, especially the younger ones very friendly and helpful. Thanks for the hospitality.
I don't' know what to say about the privileges our government gives to illegals, while people like you are trying hard and paying to come legally. They want people to obey the laws and then they turn around and reward them for sneaking in, driving without licenses and ins. stealing identities. We are fighting to change it, but it seems to be a hard long road to travel.
Do you have white skin ? I will provide further information when you answer.Sorry you should have said that in the first place. I am a brown skin hispanic American from Texas. In fact I am almost full blooded Azteca. I am not from present day Mexico. Most of my ancestors were born in Texas. In Texas there is alot of discrimination against brown hispanics from white Americans.A huge majority of the illegal Mexicans are brown. Brown Mexicans are hated by white Mexicans in Mexico and in fact they are trying to get rid of them by sending them to American. The brown Mexicans are also hated by white Americans in the USA. Therefore about the only way they are going to get legal is to get amnesty.
Do you live in north Dallas. The reason I ask my wife & I have a German friend living in north Dallas. My first name is Mando.
