I currently take 800mg of Ibuprofen nightly before bed to help control my asthma symptoms. I know it sounds strange, but without insurance I can no longer afford my regular medication and this seems to work just as well. My question is if anyone knows of any negative side effects from long term usage of ibuprofen? I appreciate all feedback and thanks in advance.

honestly- the ibuprofen is not improving your asthma. you may think it is because you aren't really having any problems with your asthma right now. there are a lot of holistic things you can try. ibuprofen is very caustic to the lining of your stomach and is hard on your liver. there are also many cardiovascular issues from long term usage.
Negative Side Effects Of Ibuprofen
You probably need a upper GI scope done, nausea and loss of appetite can be side effects of ibuprofen (usually only long term though), the dark stool could be a sign of a bleeding stomach (not usually green though, but possible). You should see a doctor. If you are on any other medications, they could increase risks associated with ibuprofen use.
This medicine can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use ibuprofen. Do not use this medicine just before or after having heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of heart or circulation problems, such as chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.
This medicine can also increase your risk of serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and gastrointestinal effects can occur without warning at any time while you are taking ibuprofen. Older adults may have an even greater risk of these serious gastrointestinal side effects.
Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
donot Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. An overdose of ibuprofen can cause damage to your stomach or intestines. The maximum amount of ibuprofen for adults is 800 milligrams per dose or 3200 mg per day (4 maximum doses). Use only the smallest amount of ibuprofen needed to get relief from your pain, swelling, or fever.
emt Avoid taking ibuprofen if you are taking aspirin to prevent stroke or heart attack. Ibuprofen can make aspirin less effective in protecting your heart and blood vessels. If you must use both medications, take the ibuprofen at least 8 hours before or 30 minutes after you take the aspirin (non-enteric coated form).
noalcohol Do not drink alcohol while taking ibuprofen. Alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding caused by ibuprofen.
I have always been told and read that ibuprofen causes or worsens asthma so something is not right here. That's the equivalent of four standard dose tablets. If taken all at once will not be good for your liver or stomach. If you want to continue taking them I suggest time release and on a full stomach but I can't see that they are helping your asthma.
I have a script for the same dosage of ibuprofen as you listed. I would be a little concerned about taking it every night. I think over time this would take a bit of a toll on your stomach. It may cause you to get a stomach ulcer. I just think it is awful that you can't have your asthma meds you need. My sister in law takes that lyrica. Her insurance won't pay for it, so she gets samples from her dr. Is it possible that you could explain to your dr. that you cannot afford it and ask for samples. Asthma is serious and you need your meds. Maybe if you would call and ask for samples you could just get them as you need them. maybe a month at a time. take care of yourself. If you take the ibuprofen every day. Just make sure you eat a little something or drink a half glass or so of milk. make sure something is on your stomach. don't take it on an empty belly.
I have taken 3000mgs in a day and didn't have any problems, I asked my doctor about it, and he said taking that much isn't good for your liver or your stomach lining, but if your not taking more then the recommended dosage, you should be fine
