I purchased my first laptop last December (2010). It was a brand new HP with Core i3 and Windows 7 that I needed for work every so often.
I also have an iMac and PC desktop, so the laptop is maybe used once a month for maybe an hour tops (not as often as I had thought I needed...at least not yet).
Is my laptop okay sitting around like it is for so long being used only a couple times a month, or should I be using it more often to increase it's overall lifespan?
Thanks!

It should be fine sitting unused unless it's pulling in lots of dust. Unplug the battery and keep it (both) in a nylon case and You should be fine. Whenever possible use the wall plug for running it, and every 3rd use run it on the battery, then let it charge for an hour, and pack it back up. G'LUCK!!!.
All of these answers are OK. If you plan to store it for
any length of time; remove the battery (after it is fully
charged) and place it in a cool dry location. Use a large
Zip-Lock bag (for the laptop) to store it in (with a small
packet of desiccant to keep the contents moisture-free).
Store same in a cool dry location. Exercising the battery
once a month will keep it's ability to hold a good charge
providing you run the battery down to about 10 % (or when
the laptop will not operate right). This should work well
for you. Keeping the unit clean and free from dust is very
important (as with all electronic devices) to increase the
life of same. Feel free to e-me.
You won't decrease the life of a laptop by letting it just "sit" if anything, it will stay the same or increase.
First off, the number 1 thing that kills computer is DUST. If you store that sitting laptop in a case or a resealable bag where it won't collect dust, you can easily triple it's lifespan.
once a week, give it some work like, disk defragmenting.even listen music.just for the battery there is no other problem.
