Karl Marx, among others, realized that very little of the wealth produced by the laborers in factories and other industrial settings was being paid to the workers, the ones upon whom the whole system depended.

It was realized that if the workers waited for the factory owners to see the unfairness of this and offer some remediation, they would have to wait to infinity. Thus Socialism and other reform minded movements were born of this sense of injustice.
