You can test this yourself quite easily. Assuming it's legally and morally acceptable, try drinking alcohol. You will change your perception of yourself and those around you.
I don't mean going dizzy and falling over, either. You will gain confidence and lose inhibitions. You'll do things you know you wouldn't do while sober, because while you're drunk they seem like good ideas. Altering the brain's chemistry alters the personality.
That said, It certainly doesn't appear as though one can reach into a person's brain and extract The Consciousness. It seems it lies in the interactions and signals between the neurons. Beyond that is a struggle.
