I saw a car getting towed today, and couldn't figure out why. It was in a parking zone, because I've parked there all the time without any trouble. Is it because it was there for a long time? (it had a few tickets on the window, and a boot. Can that happen?). I'm curious mainly because I just parked on a big pile of leaves, and I'd rather not get a ticket.

I don't know where you are. Each state has it's own laws. It may be illegal in your state or city but whether its legal or not it is a poor idea. The heat from the car's exhaust system has been known to ignite leaf piles.
.
Does the fact that it accumulated several tickets, then a boot, not give you a clue as to why they eventually towed it?
Is parallel parking on leaf piles illegal?
No its not.
Forget leaves park on the traffic warden or who ever, can't get their pen out then
I do not know if it is illegal, but it is dangerous. It can cause a fire.
