I've watched some documentaries on America's hardest prisons. The torture that people have to go through in prison seems to be beyond belief. I can't help but think that prison doesn't "reform" anyone, it just makes them worse criminals. Some people get a few years and then end up spending LIFE because of what they have to do to survive in prison. People are killed. stabbed, beaten, raped, and tortured. Its disgusting and it needs to be reformed. Not everyone in prison is a rapist or a murderer, and I don't think drug dealers fall in to that category. Wouldn't you agree that the prison system is counter-productive, instead of rehabilitating people, its making them WORSE. Not to mention that since no justice system is perfect, there are innocent people in prison.

"Is prison cruel and unusual punishment?". No, wake up. Prison is our way of punishing criminals. How else would we punish someone? "The torture that people have to go through in prison seems to be beyond belief". I have zero idea what you're talking about. If you think Americas prisons are a form of torture, you should look into prisons in places in the Middle East. "I can't help but think that prison doesn't "reform" anyone, it just makes them worse criminals". Not everyone can be reformed. It's up to the person themself to decide that they are able to act like a normal human being and stay out of trouble. Plenty of people can say "hey, I hate being in prison" and never go back. "Some people get a few years and then end up spending LIFE because of what they have to do to survive in prison." You never have to fight or kill someone. It's your own choice. There are police all around to take care of theses situations, and once they happen, they have every right to issue a punishment to someone for breaking the law, even inside a prison or jail. "People are killed. stabbed, beaten, raped, and tortured. Its disgusting and it needs to be reformed." You are missing the whole point of jail. It's a punishment - not a reward. Bad people go to prison, hence why bad things happen in prison. You don't want to deal with these things, don't break the law. Plain and simple. "Not everyone in prison is a rapist or a murderer, and I don't think drug dealers fall in to that category." That does not matter. If you are a criminal, you are a criminal. Every crime can't go without punishment. Whether you are a murderer or a robber. "Wouldn't you agree that the prison system is counter-productive, instead of rehabilitating people, its making them WORSE." Again, I have no idea how you come to this conclusion. The whole point of prison is to get a criminal to make their own choice to reform themselves and decide to stop breaking the law. Prison isn't a place to have fun, play around, and be happy and proud of yourself. "Not to mention that since no justice system is perfect, there are innocent people in prison." Only a small percentage compared to everyone in a prison. More often then not, on appeal these people get free if they truly did not commit the crime that put them there.

Prison in the United States is not cruel and unusual. If it was, courts would require changes so prisoner's right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment was not being violated.
While reform is a goal of prison, the ultimate goal is restraint. Prison is meant to restrain dangerous people from committing more crimes against other citizens. Prisons are meant to protect you, the average citizen, from criminals.
Yes, sometimes people are stabbed, beaten, tortured, maimed, assaulted, raped, etc. in prison by other inmates. That's what happens when you put a lot of people together who are considered dangerous and/or have committed crimes against other people and society.
Corrections Officers work very hard in a very dangerous environment to try and keep inmates safe from each other. CO's however are outnumbered by inmates, just like police officers are outnumbered by citizens. A police officer cannot possibly prevent every crime that happens in their city, and a CO cannot prevent every crime that happens between inmates in their prison.
It is true that on rare occasions innocent people go to prison. Our court system is actually setup with the idea in mind that we will set 100 guilty people free in order to prevent 1 innocent person from going to prison.
When someone goes to prison, there is a chance of reform. However, they are also in a situation where they are collaborating and learning from other criminals. They may return to general public with new ideas of how to commit crimes.
So conclude, prison is not a happy place and it isn't the greatest place for changing people. You cannot force someone to change, but you can keep them from hurting more innocent people during their sentence.
There should be more creative sentences for non-violent offenders like house arrest with prison as a threat if they leave the area of the house. Prison can make a small-time criminal a big-time one by the time they are released.
However, most of the cruelty that inmates undergo is at the hands of other inmates, so the state is not responsible - they are merely warehousing the inmate.
Prisons are required to provide law libraries, school classes (many times college classes), jobs, job training, meals, showers, TV, etc... We do not have those requirements for schools, just inmates... because inmates file many lawsuits.

If you Saw any of this, it was in the worst of the worst state Max. Security prison for violent/repeat offenders. It makes for better television. Or, in the third wold, like the Bangkok Hilton.
Most prisons have a min. sec. area. If you saw a typical day in one, or a fed. prison, you'd be bored.
Sometimes, prison isn't for reforming, just getting someone out of society. Like capitol punishment doesn't reform, it eliminates that person from hurting anyone again.
REF: In court 16X, what Judge Ron Fe** said on sentencing a guy .
American prisons cruel and unusual punishment? Hardly! I worked in a state prison for 8 years and the inmates received yard recreation once a day for 2 hours, followed by 2 hours of dayroom inside the building where they could hang out with fellow inmates and shave and shower, and had their food catered to them. They were allowed magazine subscriptions, had access to libraries and law libraries, watched television, received packages quarterly from friends and family, and received stamped envelopes compliments of the state. Give me a break on the cruel and unusual! By the way, in my state inmates who take medication must receive brand name pills. Most law-abiding citizens can't get brand name! In this state, the cost of housing and feeding an inmate runs the taxpayers $36,000 a year and that's without medication and other needs. One inmate cost the state over $400,000 a year because of hospital visits, medication, and a blood-clotting drug he needed.
Have you seen REAL prisons in El Salvador and Peru?
"Wouldn't you agree that the prison system is counter-productive, instead of rehabilitating people, its making them ""
Depends - but sometimes its not about rehablitiating people.. Sometime drug dealers and rapist are beyond help and you certainly cant let them loose in the community
I had to pass hunt for the story yet no website provided lots interior the way of information of the crime it is important. everybody needs to talk the full existence in penitentiary. we've the "3 strikes you're out" legal regulation in many states which sentences all people who's 18 or older to existence in penitentiary. Is that basically? i don't understand. For a boy to prey upon between the main susceptible and defenseless contributors of society with considered one of those violent and worrying act at considered one of those youthful age might advise they at the instant can not reform. it is not how a "feminist" sees it yet how a choose sees it. Who knows? consistent with hazard the guy became into killing animals or had different legal issues in the previous it. i don't understand if it is basically or to not keep him at the back of bars for concern of re-offending, yet what if that they had enable him out at 21? it is common. Do you particularly think of he could have led or might have led a common existence after being in penitentiary for 5 years?
I would not say is cruel nor unusual, they have reasons to be in there and they have to pay for punishments
