Lab Report chemical/physical properties?.?

Identifying unknown substances using physical and/or chemical properties.

Also some possible sources of error?

Materials: 1) Safety Goggles

2) Original containers for; salt, baking soda, chalk, sodium, nitrate, and sodium sulphate.

3) Numbered samples of five unknown solids

4) Toothpicks/wooden splint

5) Hand lens

6) Spot plate or microtray

7) Medicine dropper

8) Small beaker with distilled water

9) Small beaker with dilute hydrochloric acid (3-5%)

Procedure: 1) Put on your safety goggles.

2) Observe each of the properties of the 5 different unknown substances and record your observations. (Do not touch nor smell the chemicals.)

3) Pick up each substance, using the tip of your wooden splint and place each numbered sample, into a different well of the spot plate.

4) Add 4 drops of water to each sample, using a medicine dropper and stir each of them gently. Rate the solubility of each sample and record your information.

5) Repeat step 4) using acid in place of water. Record your observations.
