Yeah, downtown is great. Let me give my recommendations, as a resident:
Jillians. Great club down there, that very few people know about. It is rarely busy (other than Friday/Saturday) because so few people know about it.
Binion's. Great poker room. Play where texas hold 'em was born! They have tons of good tourney's throughout the day, 75 people, $70 entry, and a tiered payout system where the winner takes home ~$2500.
Golden Nugget. Great buffet and one of the "fancier" places downtown. Great seats at the slot machine.
Main Street Station. Kind of tucked away off of Main st. Triple 7 brewery is awesome, and after midnight it is $1 draws (and they are 12 ouncers in a glass of microbrew, none of that low quality stuff!)
You can get a quality margarita for $1 downtown as well.
Let me also recommend "Skyline" casino that is down near Boulder Hwy and Russell Rd (by the Silver Bowl stadium). They have the best $1 shrimp cocktails in town. Worth the trip!
I was there once and stayed for about 6 months. It's like a whole different world there. It's so lit up 24 hours a day. At night it looks like it's daytime. Everything has so many lights and there are lit up fountains. There are many shows to go to, shopping, many casino's and the city is surrounded by mountains. If you drive up to the mountain area Lake Mead is way up there and I have went swimming in it. The weather there is pretty nice. When it is about a 100 degrees it feels comfortable because there is no humidity there, so you don't sweat. I preferred the "strip" area rather than right downtown. In the heart of the dowtown area in the middle of the night is not a very safe area. Some people get mugged by people who want gambling money. It's nice on the strip. There are shuttle buses that will take you from the strip to the downtown section. Many of the limosene's that you will see have famous people in them. My mom lived there for 34 years and moved back to Michigan last year. She got tired of life in the fast lane. I haven't been there in years. Well, have fun if you are planning a vacation there!
Up until maybe 20 years ago I used to prefer downtown to the strip. It used to be *THE* place for cheap booze, cheap food, and low minimum tables (I've played quarter craps and ten cent roulette many an hour there). The old-timer casino owners have died off or sold out and now all the charm of downtown is gone.
Walk through the downtown and enjoy the ceiling light show (I forget what it's called) once just to say you've done it, take a glance at some of the old historic casinos just so that you can say you've seen them, and then don't bother going back for a couple decades or so.
Within 5 miles of the "Strip", Downtown Las Vegas is the location of several features such as "The Golden Nuget", "The Four Queens" & "Glitter Gultch" Casinos as well as "The Fremont Street Experience". Naturally there are plenty of retail stores & restaurants & the casinos themselves are historic & display interesting lobbies filled with exceptional people watching opportunities. On our 1st cross country trip in 1976 (Bi-Centenial) from NY to California, we could drive on Fremont Street but subsequent trips revealed the 'pedestrian mall' displaying an elaborate light show overhead. It's only part of the many things to do in Las Vegas but 'Downtown', of course, also is the location of things like the Municipal Center with Post Office, Federal Building, Banks & Transportation hubs. Have fun!
If you are referring to the "old" downtown, check out Fremont Street at night...awesome light show. The "new" downtown has everything you would ever want to see and do. If you go to the Hard Rock and eat dinner, ask for the 777. It's not on the menu..steak,potatoes and some type of vegi for $7.77. Great town..going back in 2 weeks.
Downtown is my favorite part of living here. It's original vegas! It hasn't changed to cater to families, clubs or anything. It's exactly the same. In all its glory! A little dirty and I wouldn't stray of the beatin path to much, but it's a lot of fun and they are opening up a new bar district just east of the Fremont Street Experience. It's the new place to be with the old glory.
what is there to do in downtown las vegas? get out. it's pretty seedy there right now. the city is working really hard to get the drug dealers and prostitutes out but they still have work to do. i just thought it was sad because the casinos are so run down and so are the people gambling in them. it's not like being on the strip at all.
Down town is also known as "Old Las Vegas", Casinos are not as crowded as those on the strip, they have a great light show every day on Fremont St worth paying it a visit.
Down there all the time. Cheaper than Strip by a mile & better gambling. nice romantic restaurant at 4 Queens - Hugos Cellar. Less things to see but then the Strip is just for people who want to aimlessly waste $$ & see something they could see on TV much cheaper. Side trip to Sams Town of value.
oooo they have this tent built over the downtown area full of thousands of lightbulb and at the top of the hour, they play like a little video and song. its so cool. mostly lots of casinos and there are lots of carts and stuff where u can shop and buy souveniers...
