I got my son a lava lamp for christmas and the botom of the package says "This product contains one or more chemicals known to the State of Calofornia to cuase cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling." What are the chemicals, what is there use in the lava lamp and what cancer do they cause?

it's most likely lead. They put it in coffee cups like the glazing of coffee cups, some earrings and necklaces, electrical cords like the one on my hair straightener, and lamps. just wash your hands after you touch it. Don't touch food after holding it either
Christmas Lava Lamps
I KNOW!!! I just bought an iron and it said the exact same thing about the cord. I was like... what the heck?!?! Why should i have to wash my hands after every time I iron my clothing?!?! I couldn't take it back because I already opened it and threw away the box and I bought it at Target and they have a tough return policy. It said the cord had a high lead content. So ... maybe it is something with the cord? Who knows. The way I see it we are all going to end up with cancer with everything they keep telling us is causing it!
electronics usually contain lead. Its most likely from the electrical portion of the lava lamp. Also the liquid inside is most likely petroleum in nature and petroleum has been known to have its bad properties.
Nothing to worry about as long as the lamp is used the way it supposed to be.
When you dispose your lava lamp (50 yrs from now), make sure you don't shatter the glass part so you don't get cancer.
Product contains lead in the solder joints. Lead residue in trace amounts exists on the outside of product.
Think about it. It's California. They're paranoid about everything. They have the most strict and stupid laws for everything. As long as you don't ingest it, I think you'll be perfectly fine.
Just dont drink the contents and you all should be fine.
you should be fine dont drink or open the glass bottle it comes in though
Funny, I was wondering the same thing myself
