Weather is much warmer in LA and you would need an automobile to get around; overall, there is more space and people laid-back in LA. The beaches are nicer, cleaner, better for sun lovers (because there is sunshine and it isn't as cold as SF is most of the time). It is closer to Disneyland and Mexico if you like to visit those places. You can actually have a wardrobe with summer clothing in it that you'll use. There are more Republicans in So. California and Orange Co is where I recall the right wing John Birch Society had some influence years ago. I don't know if they continue to be as active since it's been many years since I've lived in LA.
SF you don't need a car because public transportation is better and you can always arrange to join the ZipCar pool for those few days when you might want to take a car someplace. SF is beautiful, culturally diverse and located in a very small geographical area: This has it's drawback because everywhere you go, there are lines to stand in and more people and vehicles and a shortage of parking spaces. Even most houses (as it is in the commercial districts) sit right next to each other, with no space in between buildings. There is no privacy when you go into the yards. SF is a more expensive place to live in.
Los Angeles is a big, sprawling city, and the down town area isn't as nice as San Francisco's. LA does have gang stuff, but that shouldn't be a reason not to go, as long as you stay away from the bad areas like any other city, it should be fine. LA also has Hollywood and all that celebrity stuff if it interests you, and its closer to the Mexico border if you want to go.
San Francisco is also a nice city, it's downtown is more interesting then LA's, and its probably safer if you're worried about that. San Francisco also has the largest China town in North America, the trollies, waterfront etc... and across the bay is Oakland and about an hour away from San Francisco is San Jose, the largest city in the bay area and the home of silicone valley.
I would say San Francisco, its a really nice city, but LA isn't bad either

San Francisco > L.A. - L.A. has a lot of gang/drug problems and is unsafe. I'm sure San Fran has that stuff too but it's more under wraps than L.A.
if you like the coast, SF. if you like authentic Asian food like my mama makes, then SF.
