I'm currently 16, 5'8", and 160 lbs, but my friend is about the same height and age as me and 125 lbs. With dieting and exercise, how long would it take to drop 40 lbs?
First if all, you should be happy with what you look like. Second, there are different variables, metabolism, body structure, genetic background. Thirdly, if you are trying, lose all carbs, and exercise daily. It could take about 6-10 months. If you lose weight to fast, you could end up with Health problems
With a strict diet and serious exercise regimen, along with constant daily activities and proper sleep/rest, about 2-4 months. That's without any slip ups. Remember, cheating on a diet is only cheating your progress. Everyday you're not at your goal weight and health is another day where you won't be 100% satisfied with yourself.

You do NOT want to drop 40 pounds, that would be UNHEALTHY.
You want to lose fat, then gain muscle, so actually only lose around 10-15 pounds for an AVERAGE person.
You can do general exercises that do not require you to be anything.
Pushups
Situps
Running
Stretches
'superman' workout (often used for golf, but good for exercise)
Also: weight lifting, cycling and more
