Hi, I am a middle school student (not a college student!). I need a new computer, I currently own a Toshiba Satellite (2004 series-it's ancient). I want to switch to Mac products. However, I need help... I can't decide between a Macbook Pro or a Macbook Air. My basic use[s] are the internet [Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Research for papers, etc.], Microsoft Office/Or any other tasking programs [that I need to use for school], and I want to be a writer... I'm only in the 8th grade. I would like portability, so I can take it to my classes. Also, I need something fast and won't crash on me. Also, my current [total] memory on my laptop is 74 GB, it's lasted me for 7 years... The Macbook Air offers more space than I need. However, the Macbook Pro also has more storage and features..I'm baffled on what computer to get. I don't have a lot of money, I need something that will last!
If I get the Macbook Air - 13-inch : 128GB
1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
2GB memory
128GB flash storage1
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
A total of $1,497 [covering iWorks and Microsoft Office [not included: drive for CD)
If I get the Macbook Pro- 13-inch: 2.3 GHz
2.3GHz dual-core
Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz
320GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Built-in battery (7 hours)2
The total is $1,397 [Including iWork and Microsoft Office]
What do you think I should get? The Macbook Pro seems cheaper... But tell me your ideas/opinions.
Thanks :)
Update:Umm... All of the PCs I have used always heat up! My computer is a Toshiba Satellite, and it has vertical lines running through the monitor, I have taken it to many computer techs... They've said it's because my computer is CHEAPLY made. PCs can't preform the task that Macs can! My Toshiba is the worst purchase I've ever bought, okay Mario!

I don't find anything good about the MacBook Air apart from its slim design. I'm in uni and have a 13" MacBook Pro which I bought this year and I really love it. It makes my Windows laptop look like a joke - compare 7+ hours of battery life to 1 1/2 hours. I always had to bring my charger or use "strategically" to avoid the battery dying on me but I don't have that problem anymore.
The MacBook Pro is definitely worth the price - the MacBook Air is only expensive because of its design. The MacBook Pro isn't too bulky either and is thinner than many other laptops. I have the same MacBook Pro you listed and I am more than satisfied about it - although the only downside is there are only 2 USB ports. There is extra space next to the disc drive which could really do with 2 more.
Definitely get the MacBook Pro - it's more practical and worth the money.
I'm with mariokiller, macs are over priced garbage. Kid you would do just fine with the <$400 laptop that he recommended. With all that saved money that you would have you could fund your hopes and dreams of becoming a writer. Don't be a fanboy, the only thing apple does right are iPods, and that's because there is no good competition.
Edit:
Name ONE thing a mac can do better than a PC, just one.
Although terribly overpriced, given only the two options I would say to get the Macbook Pro.
It's cheaper, looks better (in my opinion), has better CPU, better RAM, and a comparable graphics solution. With better all-around specs, the laptop should last you longer.
Mac air is good for school because it's slim but the pro have more features like a DVD player
i have been using a pro for about five years...only thing is the dvd burned quit a year ago... I burned tons of dvds as I am a photographer...got mine at a pawn shop for 1200.00 best computer I have ever owned
buy something other than macs. not worth all the money
PC?
