a lot of shading and quicker sketches of this nature, regular pencils could arguably be better,
a wide, fat point, if you want, to cover more area
but for detailed drawing (among other daily tasks)
there's nothing like a good .05 mechanical pencil for the small, sharp, fine-tuning - always gets right to the point!
and the better pencils, like a Pilot Dr. Grip, won't jam, they'll last for years, and are more than worth the $5
(and have a .07 on hand as well as an option for heavier lines)
overall, i'd rather pack a little plastic tube of replacement lead than a pencil sharpener to keep going back to, and then you have all those messy shavings to keep dealing with
plus your line thickness keeps varying while your point wears down
so not so good for the detailed stuff
something like this, have fun and diversify a bit, see what works for you depending on what's invigorating for you to draw
If it's just for writing, I'd stick with mechanical pencil since you won't have to keep sharpening it.
But for drawing, mechanical pencils are used for more fine lined sketches, like for detail. On the other hand, regular pencils can give you thin and thick lines, depending on the positions you use the pencil. Regular pencils are also a lot faster for shading in bigger blocks of areas.
One cannot beat mechanical pencils 4 technical drawings, as the only other way is 2 use a razor-sharp 4H - 6H pencil.
As for general drawing, it is probably best 2 get a set of good pencils, the mechanical pencil that I have cost about the same as a set of 12 good quality sketching pencils!!
i use both because it depends where i am. if i'm at school then i use mechanical because its the only thing i have. if at home i use regular because i have my art kit there.

I love my mechanical pencils... they never need sharpening. Just click!
But I work from home so I don't have to carry any supplies around.
Mechanical pencil,
being fairly old-fashioned, too-
this depends on the type of drawing you're doing

Well, it depends on how you watch to sketch/draw.

I prefer a nice set of wood pencils..
mechanical pencils tend to leave lines and indentions in the paper after you erase...
They are easier on hte pocket book.
Easier to find.
Some people dont like to sharpen pencils regularly.
I guess people would rather click a button than turn the wrist.. but not me.. I keep my tips sharp and have no problem achieving very fine lines.
Just my preference from experience.

mechanical why:because when you need to sharpen you don't need to and the lead part just keep it in pocket
Mechanical. The writing is more finite and you don't have to sharpen it.
yes regular for me also
