I used to prefer Mechanical Pencil, but I use Pencil so much for work that the Mechanical ones become useless because the lead breaks so often. So now, I prefer the old school wooden Pencil.
Depends upon what type work you are doing. If it is just writing, either learn to use less pressure when using the mechanical pencil or switch to a wood one. I use wood pencils for drafting and mechanical drawing because I can use the different hardness/softness (#1, #2, #3, etc) as it is stamped on the shaft. A mechanical pencil does not have that and it would be a guessing game to remember what lead you have in it.
Regular wood pencils. The lead for mechanical pencils is expensive, and I don't live near a store that sells it. Just give me a regular pencil, or better yet a pen.
I like both, and both can be used separately or together to get very nice effects. Overall though, I use mechanical pencils, and have come up with several artistic uses for them.

Depends on what I'm doing. Mechanical pencils are great, no need to sharpen but wood pencils are better for shading when doing illustration work.
