A menstrual cup is basically a disposable container that is inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual flow. Unlike a pad/tampon it doesn't "soak" it up, it just collects it.
I'll add a Wikipedia article so you can get more info on menstrual cups as well as the website for a popular one "Instead". You can get the Instead at Walmart. I bought a box to try for my next cycle. I'll let you know how it went!
It's like a little rubber or silicone cup that goes in there to stop the blood flow. It looks pretty much like a diaphragm with a stem on the end...the ones I've heard of are the Diva cup, and the Keeper. I tried the Keeper once, and while it was more comfortable for me than tampons, it was a little bit gross and awkward removing it. Supposedly you can have sex while you have it in but I never tried because I was mortified that it would come out and I would have a huge mess. Sorry if that's TMI!!
I guess plenty of people use them but they are definitely not as popular as regular tampons or pads.
I tried one for a while. It's called the Diva cup. Google it and you'll find the site. I didn't like it because of the suction sensation I felt while removing it. I didn't like it very much, and also thought it was a little messy. Plus, it made for odd situations in public bathrooms.
Every woman is different, so try it out.
It's great for the environment because you reuse the same cup every time.
They are like a little dome-shaped cup that you slip inside yourself that holds the blood in place until they are removed. I tried them out and prefer tampons. I didn't see any advantage other than you can have sex when you have your period. I am fine skipping a few days. Also, when you remove it, it is kinda bloody and gross. Try them out and see what you think.
