Mormon eternal marriages?

One thing that I don't understand is how the sealing gives any benefit. The way I see it, you will end up in one of two situations:

1) In the celestial kingdom, with your family members who also made it into the celestial kingdom. You're in the same place forever, so there is no need for you to be sealed in order to stay together.

2) Not in the celestial kingdom, apart from your family members who made it into the celestial kingdom. You're not together forever, so the sealing had no effect.

What is the benefit of being "sealed"?

Update:

@David: OK, but as I just outlined above, sealing doesn't seem to have any effect on "being together with your family forever".
