Hi, I am a Doula so I can help a little with your current situation!
The plug can go just before labour beins, but this could be with a week to go or a day, is this your first baby? The plug comes away as the mouth of the cervix is begining to slightly open as the baby pushes down. The basic answer is that the baby is getting ready to be welcomed into the world.
I lost my mucus plug 24 hours before my son was born and true to form a lot of my friends and relatives have all had their babies within 24 hours of losing their mucus plug- I know that it can take weeksof even months but this is fairly unusual and it is usually a sign that your labour will progress shortly- I wish you the best of luck!!!
With my first I lost the 'plug' at 6am and went into labour at 10pm that night - baby born 6 hours later.
With 2nd I never lost the 'plug' until I was at hospital waiting for them to fill up the birthing pool.
Apparently you can lose your plug up to a week before labour occurs. Phone your midwife if you are too unsure about it, she will reassure you of any uncertainties.
I had a sweep by my midwife and lost the plug that night but didn't have the baby till eight days later, I really thought it would happen when the plug came away but had the baby the day before I was meant to be induced.
It was four days with me. It's never months (don't know where that answerer got her facts from!) the most would be four weeks but that's very unusual. It's normally an indication that labour is less than a week away. Very best wishes to you! x
i had my daughter 9 weeks ago.I was 39 weeks pregnant. I lost my plug on the sunday nite(25th nov), contractions started on the monday morning(26th nov) and had her that nite!

i was actually in labour before mine came away and didnt realise it.
You can pass the mucous plug months before going into labor, it then reforms.
