I just bought a 7 week old kitten and I brought him to the vet and they told me that he had parasites in his stool, coccidia? I was wondering if it would go away with medication or will it come back througout his life?
It's a parasite, but not a worm. It's generally treated with an antibiotic called Albon, for 10 days. Sometimes a second round of Albon is needed if they've got a really stubborn case. It's also best to dump the litter, and clean and bleach his litter box while he's being treated, and also once more after the 10 days on the Albon are up. The Albon will take care of it, and that should be the end of it. If you have other cats who've used his litter box, they may get it as well, so they should be treated also.
It'll go away with medication. Kittens usually get Coccidia from a dirty litter box. This isn't to say that yours is dirty, but maybe whoever you got him from wasn't good at keeping the box ABSOLUTELY clean.
Just always clean your litter box at least once (preferably twice) per day, and your kitten shouldn't get Coccidia again.
Remember to get him neutered by the time he's about 4-5 months old, if you don't want him to start to spray/mark. AND, feed him a good quality KITTEN food, until he's at least ONE YEAR old.
Good luck.........ENJOY him......they grow up waaaaaaay too fast!
With proper medication, it will go away. It is not a dormant type of parasite that can re-activate. It is a nasty parasite and it can kill your kitten if not completely eradicated. Treatment should be completed with all medication utilized. It can be difficult to diagnose, so you obviously have a good vet. Congratulations on your new baby.

It is a protozoa, not a virus. It will be easily treated with Albon and the kitten will be fine.
It will go away in time with medications
