When I first got my guinea pig when I pat it or rubbed it against the flow of his fur, he'd immediately turn around and open his mouth like he was going to bite, he wouldn't ever pur. But the other one ALWAYS purs. IT seems the first one seems to be trying to appear tough, because I'm starting to see him unable to keep from purring now, but he'll still try to stop his enjoyment, turn around, and nip. Rather than flatten out like the other one and sit there, and eat cucumbers. Is this bad?
Update:Actually almost all guinea pigs pur when you rub their fur against the way it flows. I've had three, all of them pur when I do this, this one just doesn't seem to want to relax around a possible-predator (understandable), yet it can't resist the charms and pleasure of it. Either I typed the question badly, or a lot of you are BS guinea pig owners.

It makes me so sad that people do not see they are terrorizing their pets, your guinea pig is in horrid pain and is trying to tell you to STOP. I do not know of one guinea pig that enjoys their fur being petted against the grain or backwards, it is terrible that you do it, how would you feel if some one was petting you from the neck to the fore head? Not well accepted. Please try to listen to your guinea pigs when they talk to you, do not expect them to act in human behaviors but in animals behaviors which are far different.
Are you sure it's actually purring? Sometimes their rumbling can be mistaken as such. Rumbling can indicate that something is agitating them, and I've never seen a guinea pig that didn't hate to have his fur rubs against its natural flow.
He probably just doesn't like the way it feels to have his hair rubbed the wrong way. Your other guinea pig just randomly likes this and I've never heard of anyone doing that before. Just try petting him the other way and see if he warms up to you.
no this is a sign that they are nervous and don't know what to do to protect itself and cucumbers are great because it has water in it so it is like food and water at the same time and the purring is what they do for fun so get him some toys.
you shouldn't rub his fur against the way it flows. the murring sound he makes (mine make it too sometimes) means he's telling you to STOP. Like ALL furry animals, stroke it with the flow of the fur.
