A long-distance friend of mine installed a new hard drive and she describes her new settings as 'gunky'. After some basic trouble shooting, she doesn't have the option to set a better screen resolution nor colors above 16 bits. She uses windows Vista and all programs are 'blocky'. She has fiddled as much as she could with various appearance settings with no luck.
I do not have physical access to the machine. Any idea how to get the OS to look slick again?

she might have to install a driver for her video card. if its a brand name (dell, gateway etc) computer and not a white box she can go to the manufacture's website and download the drivers for her computer based on the computers model number. if its a white box computer she has to find out what kind of video card she has and look for the drivers online and reinstall them. if she reinstalls the drivers and she still doesn't have the options for higher resolution the video card may need to be reseated or could have gone bad.
The explanation isn't the greatest, so I can only guess. I think the problem is that your friend has the theme set to windows classic. To change this, simply right click on the desktop, select "personalize" and then find the theme category in the window that pops up and change it to "windows aero".
Thats because she DIDN'T install all the drivers. Tell her to go to the PC mfgs website support area and download them for her model. Install them, done deal. She is missing the graphics driver and most likely other drivers as well.
Reset the monitor settings to a higher resolution. Problem solved.
