Coolpix is the point-and-shoot lineup of Nikon. They are not as robust and dependable as their top-of-the-line dSLR counterparts. If you wish to get the same qualities of Nikon's dSLR's in a point-and-shoot camera, get a Sony Cybershot.
If you aren't going to USE the DSLR and learn how to really shoot with it and aren't wanting to invest in another lens, the P100 is going to be the better choice for you. You will have the ability to have a great hobby with it and learn as much as you want to, master some pretty beautiful things. It also has quite a zoom compared to the DSLR and you would definitely have to invest in a lens on the DSLR to have any zoom capability. 18-55 is roughly wide angle to normal. Compared to most point and shoots people are usually surprised that it's just about nothing.
