I bought a new memory card for my D50, but when I put the memory card in, the number of remaining shots didn't show in the display, instead it says CHA. What does CHA mean? Do I need to get a different memory card?

CHA is an error message where the Nikon D50 cannot access the Memory Card.
I've seen multiple Nikon D50's with this problem and it sounds like it has something to do with the capacity of your memory card. The Nikon D50 is ONLY compatible with SD cards, and not with SDHC memory cards.
If the capacity is anything over 2GB then you will most likely experience this error.
Your only option at this point would be to buy an SD memory card 2GB or below.
If you are still experiencing this error, even with a 2GB memory card then i would give Nikon support a call at 1-800-Nikon-UX.
Hope that Helps :)

RE:
Nikon D50, new memory card isn't working?
I bought a new memory card for my D50, but when I put the memory card in, the number of remaining shots didn't show in the display, instead it says CHA. What does CHA mean? Do I need to get a different memory card?
Three possibilities. 1) your card is locked. Unlikely though, because I don't think that gives a CHA error, but a "card locked" error.
2) your card has a capacity greater than 2 GB.
3) Your camera is broken. But if it works with other cards, then this possibility is unlikely.
So, that leaves us with 2) as the likely option. You do have an option other than to return/exchange the card. Instead, you can format the card via a card reader and computer in the FAT32 format. Do not format it in-camera; the camera cannot format more than 2GB. However, the camera should be able to read a FAT32 formatted memory card and provide you with proper image storage.
See if the memory card is locked. There will be a tiny 'slider' on the side. It must be in the unlocked position for it to work. I don't know what the CHA means, but check the card.

Probably because the Nikon D50 will only use memory cards up to 2 GB. At 4 GB and larger, the camera must recognize FAT 32 formatting. Your camera uses SD memory cards. It would have to use SDHC cards to use the higher capacity cards. Before you get too carried away, call Nikon USA's free live tech help line, (800) NIKON-UX, which is open all the time, 24/7/365
