I mean, masterpieces like Ave Maria and Vide Cor Meum are practically untalked about amongst our (I'm 18) age group. I've recently formed a classical music appreciation group at my college to find like minded people but I've only got about 15 or so people to come. That's a good amount though. I guess everyone is into that HipHop junk. Does anyone else feel saddned by this? What do you think we can do?
Update:I agree Tizok, I actually play tenor sax Jazz quite often. I enjoy the profound emotional aspects of the opera and classical orchestra and equally enjoy the lively and personal aspects of jazz.

Cassical music, literature and the arts are in danger because people are more interested in sex and talking on the cell phone and being dumb people who just talk about other people. very frustrating. congrats on your group it must be fun!!
I'm convinced, however, that these arts are real and will never die...because there will always be a special class/kind of people more appreciative of these treasures.
Everyone else can continue to have babies and kill each other off in lame wars and street fights with loud stupid hairy animal dancing music and naked whores grinding on the dump society they promote while some fake heroe slurs bad words at their babies' ears bullets hitting everyone but true evil.
Sorry ..I get upset about this. soo many gangs and violence and rap and hip pop music fuel it, in the schools, it becomes an identity, always the lower class falling for the baggy clothes and dusty textbooks, the pregnant girls, and the welfare system...argh disgusting.
it goes on and on...loser friends, suicides, flakes, and ultimately nobody studies, low test scores. ..high drop out rates...

What most of the answers are saying, I agree with. Boil it all down to this: Youth don't appreciate Opera and Classical music primarily because they aren't exposed to it to the degree they are other forms of music (marketing). When they are exposed to it, they don't know it.
Example; How many people who listen to the "Lone Ranger Theme" know it's actually from the William Tell Overture? Not many......How about Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" - the melody is from a song called "Auora Lee".......how about French girls dancing the "Can Can"? That's from "Orpheus" as well as being featured in Camille Saint-Saens "Carnival of the Animals". They know the tunes, or recognize the melodies, but don't have a clue that they are from classical pieces.
Yes it's sad. But look at what lasts: Music that was "hip" in the 20-30's you hardly hear any more. Big Band Jazz that was all the rage during the 30-s and throughout the war years in mid 1940's has all but died out. You don't hear hardly any of it on the radio or tv. 50-s and 60-s rock and roll is sold as Time-Life collectors CD's now. What's left that is still played in concerts, in schools, and on the radio? CLASSICAL MUSIC - "crap" that was written HUNDREDS of years ago.
Guess what, Virginia?.........the GOOD STUFF LASTS FOREVER.!!!
I think it's just a matter of awareness. Classical music isn't advertised quite like hip-hop and rock, and I've never noticed a classical music station on cable. Until there is mass awareness, you're not going to find a huge following to the genre. However, you can create a following around you by creating awareness around you. Share your love of the music and you might just spread the love. I'm actually surprised you got 15 people to show up for your appreciation group. My school could start a group for hip-hop lovers and still wouldn't get 15 people, people around here just aren't into clubs.
I like both hip hop and classical, hip hop can be a very moving artform, from writing lyrical poetic songs to spitting rhymes off the top of your head, of course not all rappers do this nowadays, but the ones that care for the craft do it. Classical is a unique genre, I like other genres of music but I think classical is on another level of its own. I truly enjoy classical music...I started listening to Beethoven about a year ago (Im 22), Ive watched his movies ..love them.. now i am actually saddned for not joining an orchestra club when I was younger, I dont think there is enough representation or advertising for classical music, and the listerners well....there is no classical music spirit in them lol, except for people who bring their instruments and play it in random places thats actually cool.
I agree, it's really sad that most people in our age group think they don't like classical. When I was in high school, I had to make quite an effort to find friends who enjoyed the same sort of music I did. My solution was to join the local youth symphony (Tacoma Youth Symphony! Whoot whoot!). Now, in college, it's not quite as hard-I just hang out with the music majors. :)
I love opera. I became semi-obsessed with Wagner's Ring Cycle when I was sixteen. The obsession continues today, lol. I just saw the Cycle this summer.
What we have to do is figure out a way to make it "relevant" to people of our generation. I'm not suggesting altering the music itself, of course, but...making it exciting, somehow. For example, when I saw the Cycle, there were several activities being put on alongside it. One of these was a "Laser Ring"-Ring music, set to a laser light show.
It's about exposure. Everyone thinks that Classical is for the ritzy, snitzy. Even way back when. Only the elite went to these concerts. The commoners were all about the folk music. Nothing has changed in 500 years except for access. If you want more young people to like classical, then they have to be exposed to it.
It isn't just classical. As time goes on, eventually all genres of music will fall into obscurity to some degree. Look at anything pre-1950s. Sure, it's reasonable to argue that we still hear much more of it today than Chopin or whatnot, but back then, it was as big as Soulja Boy or whoever the crap is on the radio today. Even classic rock, 1970's stuff, is starting to slip away. It's inevitable, unfortunately.
I know what you mean. I can hardly find anyone who listens to any classical music.
I found my admiration for classical music not too long ago. When I watched an anime that opened my mind quite a bit, I started becoming more enthusiastic about listening to classical music and learning more instruments.
I like Classical music. Not a great fan of opera since I listen sparingly.
However,I'm saddened by this(of course who wouldn't be?)but I'm more saddened by the fact that concert pianists don't make much effort into exploring obscure composers(with the exception of Marc-Andre Hamelin).
Still,Classical music is rather "profound" in the sense that it takes time to get used to the rigid structure of composition used by the composers during that time.I,myself, was turned off by it until I listened to it more.
I don't actually think we are able to do anything.I tried to bring a friend into the fold but he quickly replied"Later I become you".Pretty offensive but still he didn't mock me for liking it.
I'm 14, and i really, really, really, want to go to this opera, the marrige of figaro. I like classical too, (mostly jazz actually), but its hard to get my hands on it. my dad has only put one classical song on my ipod. we have no cds. its kinda sad. certainly, if there was a club around here, i would get more into it! sorry, but to tell u the truth i've never heard of ave maria or vide cor meum. heard of or heard. :( hmm, better get into that.maybe if there were more clubs! later!
