Good for you. Don't throw it out though. Put it into your pasta sauce or into your stock when making soup, especially chicken soup. Well, thats what I do with my leftover Parmagiano - and that includes the rind as well.
Looking at some of the previous comments, either these folk have an awful lot of money to be throwing out 'old' cheese or they don't cook a lot or even enjoy real Italian food & flavours. But then I buy my cheese in a good size wedge and when I can no longer grate it then I cook with it - it softens up really well in broth and adds great flavour. I buy really good cheese and it's not cheap! Mold? I just takes a damp cloth and wipe it off.
The "expiration date" on any product is a "sell by" date. Depending on the product, the shelf life after purchase varies on the basis on the nature of the product. For example, canned goods actually have a shelf life after purchase that lasts years.
If you are talking about a canister of ground Parmasan cheese (Kraft, etc.,usually found unrefrigerated prior to sale), the way the product is processed you probably have another three months of post-sale shelf live. By contrast, if the Parmasan was a "fresh" grated form that was refrigerated prior to sale, then you cheese is dubious.

I would throw it out and get fresh Parmesan cheese. It doesn't cost that much. Good Luck!
If it is a block of parmesean, cut the outer surfaces and use it, if it is the pre-grated cheese, I wouldn't trust it.
It is not the things that you can see that are dangerous it is the things that you can not see.Like the bacteria that is hidden in the cheese.
does it smell OK?? it sounds like it's really old. I wouldn't trust it.
