That is called the filter grill and you should be able to get it off with a screw driver. It really is not that hard.
If your filter is dirty, you need to do this ASAP or it coiuld cause you some major service bucks.
i call it the outake vent b/c its pulling the hot air or cold air out of your house depending which one you have on- you should have two screws that lock it in place -- give each of the screws quarter or half turns with your screw driver or butter knife or a dime or penny and it shouldcome loose - watch out for the dust and lose filters possible
its called the filter cover, 2 or four screws and it comes off,
2 screws onthe side or a pop off type
Remove the screws.....
