Also, ask old neighbors if anyone ever died (or somehow disappeared) in your house.

Lets say, hypothetically, that a little girl used to live at a house, but suddenly the girl was gone. Lets say that the family said that she went back east to live with her aunt. Maybe she did, and maybe she didn't. It could be that she was murdered, and now wants someone to set the record straight and tell others that she was murdered and who the murderer was. The local court house can be such a place to view deeds and such documents as well as old property records to an extent. The problem with Apartments is that it is up to the owner or property manager to keep records of individuals throughout the years and not so much a requirement . It is very difficult to know who lived in rental properties over the years and I have attempted to discover such information and know it can be difficult to come about. You can though find property information and owner information and it is all public record. Much of the time you do have to go in person and may not be able to find it over the internet. You could also visit a local historical society or the local public library to search out information and this is exactly how many paranormal investigators and researchers go about finding their information. Your best bet would be city records to find anything on the property. If you can get hold of the deeds then that will list names of owners - then you trace where they and their family died. If they died within town then very likely it would be at home.

Your local historical society is a good source -not just the doccuments but the older townsfolk who remember EVERYTHING ! Don't be afraid to ask about your place but be a bit careful about saying it's haunted.

Once you have names of who stayed at your house you can do a graveyard search. Sometimes the inscriptions give other clues - "Died at home" or "died after illness" is common but sometimes you get links to fires or drownings. Some people make a booklet of all the inscriptions on all the graves in a particular churchyard- so if one exists it makes your job much easier!

Parish records are sometimes given over to the city library - but not always, and often they are missing completely.

Finding who died in your property may not be who the ghost is, as they can be tied to the land, died while visiting, are just passing through or liked the place so much they stayed.

NOW saying that if the place is older it has a higher percentage to have more ghosts as more people might ahve lived thee over the years and ghosts will often go back to the place they loved most... Heck those ghosts could just as well be haunting YOU and in laws not the houses nor apartments... maybe you made somehting mad... they can haunt PEOPLE places or things IE they follow things around even people and if you mad ethe ghost mad it will do whatever it can to get even.. ghosts are just people.
