To be able (infinitivo de was able y were able) es una forma de decir "poder".

Acerca de cuándo usar uno u otro, es muy simple: "was able" es para cuando el sujeto es I, he, she o it; 'were able' es para cuando es you, we, o they. Punto.

Dos ejempos:

I was able to answer this guy

You were able to understand me

¡Construye cosas sencillas! "She was able to walk"... Siempre le sigue un un verbo en infinitivo ("to eat", por ejemplo), porque tienes que indicar qué podía o no podía hacer el sujeto. Haz alguna negación y quedas como Dios: "He wasn't able to speak"... etc. Y si haces una interrogativa, puede que tenga un orgasmo tu profesor@: 'Were you able to join the party yesterday?'
