Paper is the number one municipal waste in America. We keep cutting down trees to supply us with more and more paper. But that only makes matters worse....contributing to global warming but I won't get into that. There are 6 different kinds of plastics. You will notice them on your plastic containers and bottles with the recycle sign and a number in the middle. Not all of these plastics are recyclable, only the ones marked with one and two are recyclable... the rest are not.
Sorry if I rambled on, I'm not sure if I answered your question b/c I wasn't sure paper or plastic what... But when it comes to recycling, my answer is paper.
The paper industries have taken great pains to make themselves more environmentally friendly, and with the abundance of paper recycling, paper is more environmentally friendly. Plastic, under the best conditions, takes 1,000 years to decompose. Buried under the landfills, many will never decompose.
Of course, the best option is a big tote bag that you can re-use over and over again.
Neither. Buy cloth/canvas bags. They're the most environmentally friendly choice. Natural food stores sell them. It might be a little expensive at first ($10 or so) but you'll really be helping out the environment.
If you already have paper and plastic bags, you can at least re-use them. I use old plastic bags when cleaning out our cat's litter box.
I would say paper is more environmentally friendly. San Francisco recently banned plastic bags and Styrofoam products from all major corporations. So brands like Safeway must use paper bags now, since they can be easily recycled, and brands like Jamba Juice must use paper cups, instead of Styrofoam cups...
Paper costs more than plastic does, and it cuts trees down, and it takes oil to transport. You can also compost paper.
It may be hard to belive but plastic bags are actually better. The reason for this is that platic bags take less energy to create. They also take up less volume in landfills than paper bags. Read the links below and read for your self all the reasons why. Now, of course, you should be using the same cloth bags every time you shop so that you dont use paper OR plastic. That would be the besst situation.
2.5 million plastic bottles, the number used in the US every hour. This world would be a better place to live in if we all cut down on our plastic usage.
Neither. Bring your own canvas bags, and you don't have to worry. (A canvas bag folds into a one inch cube that fits into any bag. If you always drop it into your purse when you are done with it, you always have one with you.)
If you must, paper bags made out of recycled paper are slightly better than plastics made from petroleum, and can be used to bag up your old newspapers for recycling. I can bring both for re-using at my weekly farmers market - you might want to check your options. You might have a local charity shop that is looking for plastic bags or a local garden supply house who reuses paper. Reusing is better than recycling, so see which one works best for you.
canvas bags because they hold more, stronger, and reusable so therefore they are more environmentally friendlier. u can bring them to a store and never need paper or plastic EVER plus they give u 5-10 cents back each time u bring them for reuse.
That is a great question. While people's suggestions about canvas is the perfect alternative; we are not always that organized. I think plastic is the way to go because it allows the refineries to use much more of the oil that is refined which would
otherwise go to waste. While petroleum products have become more expensive and the oil of worse quality refiners have been able to increase the efficiency of their process and use everything but the squeal to offset costs.

Paper, because trees are more renewable than oil. It's also easier to recycle, I believe.
But the real answer is neither. It is always better to use and reuse your own bag made of canvas or some other environmentally-friendly cloth.

Paper is degradable while plastic is not.
