paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia?

I've been getting these random heart attacks since the beginning of my senor year ( I'm attending college this fall) It stops just as abruptly as it starts. Lately, it's been getting longer and more aggressive, to the point where breathing is difficult.I had an attack at 3 am in the morning and went to the emergency room. Luckily, they managed to get my heart rate recorded and at the time, was going 170 beats per minute. This was the "slow" heart rate I had during my attacks, usually they feel more painfully fast. And the doctor said I had paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. Now I'm trying to get MediCal so I can go to a cardiologist like he recommended. He says I will have to take medicine or possibly heart surgery. Is this a rare condition, do a lot of people have it? The doctor said I would have to endure this condition for the rest of my life until I can get surgery.
