The renaissance reintroduced much of the world view that had been systematically suppressed by the Catholic church during the preceding 1000 years. The Renaissance movement broke Europeans away from the philosophical strangle hold that the Church had imposed. People forget that many people lost their lives to launch the renaissance movement and that it was a great controversy and power struggle. if not for the renaissance the industrial revolution would probably never have happened. The French revolution would not have happened and our world would be a very very different place. Science would probably never been allowed to develop as it challenges the authority of the Church in telling us what is real. Basically we would have to start with views such as intelligent design and keep concepts like evolution in secret societies. Notions like equality, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, human rights, etc.. would be outlawed by the church with the mid evil punishment of burning at the stake still a common practice.
Wow the thought of a world without the Renaissance is really really scary.
