Hi. Could you please explain to me if Pizza Hut and Dominos Pizza drivers are getting their tips out of the new 'delivery charge'? My Pizza is 14.99...with tax, 15.73. But the charge quoted is for 17.99, which includes the 'delivery charge'......but the person working at the Dominos says that the extra is NOT the tip. How is that so? If I am charged extra for the delivery, does that not mean it is a tip to the driver? Especially since my house is about a 1/2 mile from the store. Thanks!
Update:lol...I just had a baby, I can't drive yet.

NO. They don’t. The delivery charge goes to the store.
It works like this.
Each store will charge a specific amount for a delivery charge. The proceeds thereupon are used for a few purposes, A.) to reimburse the driver for fuel cost, B.) purchase a group liability insurance policy all stores must have and C.) create extra revenue for the store from the delivery customer base.
For example, when I delivered pizza, the delivery charge was $1.00. I got about 60 to 75 cents. I never saw the remainder. Keep in mind when I deliver pizza before there was ever such thing as a delivery charge I still received that 60 - 75 cents per delivery.
So, however you slice it (no pun intended) that money certainly does not go directly to the driver. You should tip him or her at least 15% but not less than $2.00, especially if you’re a regular customer. Remember the golden rule: don’t piss off those who handle your food.
I worked at Papa John's and Domino's and the drivers made about a dollar or so per delivery as reimbursement for gas in addition to the hourly minimum wage. At the time, that Domino's had free delivery but Papa John's charged $1.75 and kept the additional money. Most customers assume that the driver receives the whole amount and tip accordingly which obviously hurts the driver. Moreover, they usually aren't allowed to tell the customer if asked and the store managers won't tell you either. I averaged about $10/hr, after paying for gas.
I believe the extra money they charge for the delivery, in your bill, is to cover the gas/car expenses. If you want the driver to actually receive a tip then you have to tip him. FYI...anything less than three dollars and I think they get mad.
Because the charge is for the delivery of how many miles you have to get to the house
The charge is for delivery... the driver's wage, I guess, and the fact that you don't have to go to the store. Convenience. Gas price to get to your home. Maintenance on the car. Et cetera.
=)
The driver DOES NOT get that money.
Get off your lazy a*ss and drive or walk there if its only a 1/2 mile
