playa del carmen / cozumel ferry?
My family and I are going to Cozumel for vacation this winter. We really want to explore on the mainland too though; and i saw that the car ferry takes 4-5 hours. does anyone think its possible to rent a car in cancun, leave it at the Playa del carmen passenger ferry, but also rent a car in cozumel (to explore the island too) this way we could take the only 45 minute passenger ferry and then use our parked car to go to the ruins, etc??

My husband and i actually just took the bus for 8 dollars a person to Playa del Carmen so we wouldn't be paying for a rental car while not using it. The bus is very, very nice. A/C, TV and Clean. On Cozumel we rented from Rentadora Isis and they went out of their way to help us with anything we needed. They are cheap and honest which is important when trying to relax on vacation! Then when we came back to Playa we rented a car from America rent a car which i would never recommend since they are in the process of ripping us off! Rentadora Isis has an office in Playa del Carmen as well and have great deals. I am renting from them next year myself. Here is their website http://www.rentadoraisis.com.mx/352.html

I think it would be a great idea while you are in Playa del Carmen to take the ferry over to Cozumel. They run about every 30 minutes from the dock to Cozumel. It is a great snorkeling place, but since you are not interested in snorkeling (although you should give it a try as there are many great coral reefs (Palencar Reef being one of the best) in Cozumel. Lots of good public beaches that you can hang out at. Shade under a Palapa with a cool drink if it gets too hot. Ocean water is warm and clear. I rented a car and drove around the island stopping wherever I desired. The island is not that big. Have fun!
Yes, you can rent a car at the Cancun airport, drive it to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry over to Cozumel. That's where my expertise ends--I've never looked into renting a car on Cozumel. But I've been to many of the ruins on the map in the link below.
