recently i noticed that my 5 yo twh mare has a kind of "knot" in her neck. it is a hard, elongated knot under her skin toward the base of her neck, on the right side. i have been keeping an eye on it and it has not gotten any bigger. it does not seem to cause her discomfort. i tried doing some research on my own, but im not sure where to start looking...any ideas? has anyone had this problem with their horse, or heard anything similar? any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

What you should really do first is contact your vet. They can more than likely figure out what it is and go from there.
Now if it turns out to be a "knot" then it could take some time to heal but it can be done. My friend's horse had one in his shoulder and she actually had a equine massage therapist come out for a month and try to help relax the knot. Also, she would lightly ride and do exercises to help stretch the muscle out.
But to be sure, you really should contact your vet.
Contact your vet. It could be so many things.
Hopefully it's just a knot in the muscle...in which case you can just talk your palm and massage the area (with your palm flat - your knuckles etc is too harsh) and the knot will release.
I don't remember what it's called, but there was once a horse who had a large lump on his chest, it got bigger over time and eventually the vet had to come drain it. It was all blood inside. So I would call your vet to come check it out. You never know.
it could be a cyst, or a blood clot, or possibly even a tumor. My best advice is to have the vet come check it out. Its very very important that you have this done as soon as possible as it could be something very bad. It most likely isn't, but just to be sure. Have the vet check it out. And go from there. Hope I helped! best of luck!
