Barack Obama will move swiftly to close Guantanamo Bay as soon as he takes office, Mr Obama is planning to ship dozens of terrorist suspects from the camp to face criminal trial in the US. It is a controversial move but one that demonstrates how abruptly he plans to change Washington in terms of policy, personnel and tone the moment he enters the Oval Office.

They've been planning on shutting down the prison. They just didn't know where to send them in the US for prosecution. The main issue is there are still innocent people in Guantanamo waiting for the prison to shut down. Bush has been working on this too.
I'm not sure what your question is. I do know that closing Guantanamo Bay is one of President Elect Obama's goals, since Bush's plan of holding prisoners outside the US in order to avoid following the laws of the US have only made the United States look like mini-Nazis. All the other details, including how to hold trials without compromising natioanl security, are still being worked out. But more power to him.
But then what.They can not go to a criminal trial. They were found no a field of battle. They still want to kill so we can not just let them go. Their home land does not want them and told us they want them dead.
So now what.
The only thing Obama is doing is moving Guantanamo to George.

I am all for shutting down GITMO. It is a black eye to what the U.S. stands for.
(EDIT) litt......you must remember that you cannot fight evil while being evil yourself....you cannot destroy yourself to help defeat the enemy. The best way for us to defeat terrorism and win the world's admiration is to do it while looking like the good guys. We must avoid looking like nazis.
No one is saying to release terrorists. They are talking giving the people trials for the charges they face. its the right thing to do. If they are guilty of something, they should pay dearly for it. If not, they should be released to go back to their country with a warning that if they are caught again on a battle field or committing terror acts or even being with a terror group....its a life sentence.

These people are enemy combatants who do not represent legitimate governments and who are not signatories to the Geneva Convention. They gave our military personnel NO quarter when fighting us, and FIFTY of the 350 released returned to fight us again.
