Believe it or not, until recently (by which I mean in the last 30 years) the Isle of Man had birching as a sanctioned form of state punishment. They had to abandon it when Britian joined the EU - I've found no statistics which show whether it was effective in IoM.

I have noticed that although a number of US States happily legislate to fry you if you commit certain crimes, none of then sanction beatings or similar corporal punishment.

I would oppose what you suggest form the following reasons;

1. No evidence it achives any positive ends;

2. State-sanctioned crime (i.e. assault) demeans us all;

3. There are more effective forms of punishment;

I suppose there's also the argument the vigilantes would run - "If the state can give this guy a good kicking, why don't we save the state the bother and do it ourselves?"

It's a slippery slope....

On balance in the end no. We have moved on from that process and whilst we are having difficulty developing a structure of respect I believe (ironically perhaps) it will be this current younger generation who will develop the processes of communication with the next few generations that will restore the balance that was once obtained only through fear.

This will give future generations more freedom as we move away from the use of fear to engineer respect.

This could be a useful form of punishment as it is cheap to apply and from the miscreant's viewpoint would enable him or her to be punished and back at work within a day or two without having life disrupted or even ruined by a short prison sentence.

I would also like to see the victims of crime given much more freedom to prevent an offence and exercise force in defence of person and property. Even if this was subject to occasional abuse, the criminal victims would be no loss to society.

I don't think its a question as to whether I agree or not it is a matter of law. Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This concept defines a society as civilized.

Here in Canada it is not legal to respond to anyone with violence unless you are a police officer with a valid means to do so. Police enforce laws, they do not convict criminals. Violence is only used when in eminent danger and or an alleged suspect resists arrest. In both cases police use what they might refer to as force and not that of violence to detain an alleged suspect.

A group of four people tried to burn down an alleged local drug dealer's house recently, the group of four were all model citizens until they challenged this law and lost. Of those four most were sentenced to substantial house arrest and their careers went down the toilets. In the very least they won't see summer this year.

The alleged drug dealer will probably be awarded compensation for his house burned down to the ground.

Everyone but the alleged criminal lost in this case.

I am AGAINST most all state controlled activities. I think corporal punishment for children should be doled out by the parents or by schools given the authority by the parents to do so.

I don't think resorting to physical violence is any way to conduct yourself in a society that calls itself 'civilised'.

Does the fact that the 'state' is administering the punishment make it less like pre-meditated assault?

In giving someone 'a good kicking' you legitimise violence as a means to solve problems. You also lower yourself to the level of a thug.

If only one man/women that is innocent is killed, then it is not worth it. Our system is not 100% right all of the time. I'm not against corporal punishment, just making mistakes. Our judicial system is not up to par to make these large responsible decision.

I agree there are people currently drawing breath who shouldn't be, but mistakes like the hanging of Ruth Ellis should be remembered when proposing capital punishment.

This to me is a real problematical question. I somewhat have a 6 year previous daughter and that i'm sole to blame for her upbringing. that's a brilliant deal.
