Yesterday I posted a question what processor was better a pentium 4 or a centron D. Now I was told that if I put the centron D into it would be faster. This morning I put it in to see how it owuld work and if it would make it faster when I got it in it started going slowly and it barely worked. Now the computer that I got the processor out of was a used computer that I got for free from a computer repair shop. I am starting to think now that they were getting rid of it was because of the processor. The main thing Im trying to ask is what happens when a processor dies. Does the computer now work or does it just run slowly. Thanks for any advice that you can give me. Techno Nerd
Update:I am posting this question from the computer right now. I put the Pentium 4 back into it to see if it made the computer faster which it did. Thanks

A 4600 Dell computer does support the Celeron D processor. They were equipped with forms of the P-4. A 533MHz or 800MHz FSB. Various speeds, some with hyper threading. This is mostly likely why the switch produced poor results. If you do the research, the 4600 also requires BIOS updates when changing to upper performance processors. I bought one of these new and it still runs today. Links are below. Hope it helps.
a CeleronD is NOT a dual core chip like a PentiumD or a Core2Duo
a CeleronD is actually an 533MHz FSB "Prescott" (pentium 4) XPU that like most "celeron" named CPUs has a reduced ammount of cache.
There are very few "Prescott" Pentium4's that the CeleronD would out perform regardless of the specific clock speed of the Celeron... this is because the CeleronD is also refered to as the
"Prescott-256", but mot "Prescott Pentium4 CPU's have 512k or 1M of L2 Cache...
Being more specific about which CPU's you are comparing would be more revealing...
The Dell 4600 is a Socket 478 MoBo so you are somewhat limited in your choices
I've also got a Dell4600 across the room from me, it is running very nicely on a 3.0Ghz P4 CPU
But it's one of the 1m cache/800MHz fsb CPU's and that system has a full load of RAM in it.
Intel Pentium 4, 2.8-3.2 GHz, with hyperthreading,(HT), 800MHz FSB. Run the inventory cooler/ with the golf green hood related. A BIOS replace from Dell (A12) is needed before you place in the processor. they're going to installation the replace. could improve to 3GB of memory DDR PC3200. no longer the quickest compaired to a prior due variety, yet solid for surfing and e mail. Mine does nicely with those additions. links are under, to save and for Dell help.
It depends on what exactly is wrong with the processor, but generally it will lose a lot of efficiency and be slower. You suspicion that the shop got rid of it because of the processor is probably right.
To find out which cpu is faster or better your best bet is to run some benchmarks. There are many free ones.
