Punk, old school at least is passionate stuff that can pack so much into 3 minutes. It also gets fast and catchy due to simplicity.
Metal on the other hand is fast paced, ultra technical stuff that just blows the mind. Its the exact opposite of the transcendance/stoned feeling you get from Prog rock. Its a equally powerful feeling of complete badassery and primal awesomeness.
Metal also has more kickass subgenres such as Prog Metal which aggressively gives you that stoner Prog feeling. Amazing.
I prefer Metal (I think Ive made that obvious by now) but old school punk, especially The Clash is awesome.
I also like the punk songs but I am fan of the metal songs, I am metal head, I think in the punk songs the music are like almost same, but in the metal songs and there solo and lead are different and pretty good
I grew up on Metal, then a friend of mine gave me an Exploited CD and my life changed. Within a year of that I was going to 3 or 4 shows a week, drinking Steel Reserves in alleys behind the venues, and it felt like I was always running from cops.
metal. nearly all the punk i've heard did nothing for me. i love the intensity and emotions i find in metal. punk is narrow and more of a 'social' thing. they're not musicians as much as 'characters'
I pretty much like anything in the extreme metal or punk scene! I listen to alot of Metalcore (As I Lay Dying/August Burns Red) which is a mix of both (metal mixed with hardcore punk to be more exact) and a bit of thrash (mainly Slayer) which is heavily influenced by punk (again, hardcore to be more exact). But i also listen to black metal, death metal, as well as alot of Post-Hardcore, I would be with both but if i really really had to choose, it would be metal! But without punk, metal would be completely different today then as we know it now!
Metal may be diverse but alot of it in each subgenre sounds the same well at least that's the way I see it and metalheads like break it into like a hundred categories. The only metal I like is doom/stoner metal. the rest is just passionless wanking pseudo intellectual crap or cheesy gory bullshit and I just can't tolerate harsh vocals at all and most metal clean vocals suck too.

I prefer metal because it has great sub genres like folk metal and symphonic metal.
