Hi All. I'm having some problems with my pupy Jack, a black lab/golden retriever mix , 50 lbs, and he's about 11 months old. I'm not exactly sure we saw some people drop him off so I don't know his exact age anyway. He doesn't like going to 'bed' he chews everything in sight so I can't leave him out to roam in the house at night. It's very hard to get him in my room; he always throws such a fuss i can't handle him sometimes, he's such a brute. Any ideas on how to get him more used to the idea of going to 'bed'? I've been dealing with this for some time now.
Update:Uh. Now I have the two bios. =[ oops.

you can bring a crate into your room so he isnt without you if he would prefer that but with the behavior you describe, a crate really does seem to be a must. You can make it very comfortable for him and put a toy and a treat in there but at bedtime I would say a phrase or a word so he knows it is time for bed. My dog wants to go to bed at the same time we do and will follow us in the room. He now can be trusted outside the crate but he is almost 16 months now and has proved himself to be a good boy so far in not chewing anything in a long while. We still say "Monty - its time to go night night" and he knows it is time to go into the bedroom and lie down. When he was little and would whine we would say "no Monty. Night Night. " and leave him. He caught on very fast. Good luck!
Buy a crate, they are great. Put treats in it and say good dog every time he goes in. I have a 6 month old lab and would never leave her out unattended, they're just puppies and inquisitive. I left her out once and she chewed at the rug. So don't feel bad about putting her away if you can't watch her. Kennels run only around 50 dollars.
Are you talking about getting him into a doggy bed, your bed, or crate?
If not a crate, you need to crate train him - get a crate big enough for him, put his favorite toys in, blankies, some treats and let him get used to it.
Never use the crate to punish him, but do reward him with a bit of real meat, cold cut, (I use liverwurst) when he gets in by himself. He sleeps in this and should be trained to get in when you say to.
Sounds as if you would benefit by taking your dog for group obedience classes - it's fun for both of and teaches you how to train your dog - it also socializes him with other dogs and people. Ask your vet for a reference to a good trainer who gives group lessons or sign up at Petco when they give lessons.
Good luck, be persistent but gentle with your dog - don't give up until he is trained enough for you to handle him.
If you really don't want to crate your puppy you can teather him to something with a short leash at nite, this will allow him to only go the few feet on the leash. This is also how I trained my lab/ border collie for housebreaking, I tied her to one of my husbands weights.
You could try taking him for long walks every night before bed time. Give him a special treat (peanut butter filled kong) at bedtime so he knows what "time" it is.
wow.
maybe a kennal, to put him into at nite. and put the kennal in your room.
