I had that exact same question, because bien and bueno are used and distinguished in Spanish more so than English. Because you know how English teacher and picky people get crazy about when some one asks "How are you?" and you respond "Good." They're like, NO! It's "I'm well" (and I say "Get a life" haha). But in Spanish you actually have to say Bien, because bueno means good and bien means well.

Now as for that interjection ¡Qué bien! vs. ¡Qué bueno! I wanted to know what the difference was, because it doesn't really make sense to have a distinction between the two. And guess what, there's not. They mean exactly the same, to my surprise. They say that ¡Qué bueno! tends to be used more in Latin America and both are used in Spain. But both of them mean Great! or Excellent!

So in that expression, they really are interchangeable, but otherwise, it does matter. Hope this helps

As I understand it 'bien' means 'well' wheras 'bueno' means 'good'

The first is if someone is enquiring about your health.

However if something is good then it is beuno or muy bueno.

The trouble is that they tend to get intermixed the same way as they do in English. For example if someone asks after you you can usually reply equally 'Very Good' or 'Very Well'

I know that is probably not a very helpful answer, but it is as I have generally found it to be.
