tomorrow i'll be wearing a yukata (summer kimono) for the first time for a school performance . im just wondering do u wear a singlet or something underneath it? Is it complicated to put it on? and, what do i do if the yukata is too big because i think the ones we have are all free size, and im small for my age so im afraid it'll be too long or something? is there anyway to fold it or anything? LASTLY, how do u do your hair when wearing a yukata? any not-too-complicated japanese hairstyles?? :) THANK YOU.

Technically speaking, there are special slips made for wearing under yukata and kimono. However, you can get away with something like a full-body dress slip or a low-necked t-shirt (or tank top) and a skirt slip if you don't have a proper yukata slip.
There are many many videos on YouTube about how to put on yukata. I would start with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCZtGi21ysM (the link to the second half should be on the right or should pop up after the video ends). If you don't like those two, search YouTube for "how to wear yukata." Some basic rules include that you must ALWAYS cross the yukata left over right, that the front panels should completely overlap, and that women's yukata will have a special tuck at the waist (called an ohashori) that appears as part of the process of adjusting the yukata to your height.
You can do pretty much anything that you want with your hair. Most people these days don't wear traditional Japanese hair styles, even with kimono -- and definitely not with yukata. Any kind of up-do that pulls your hair up off your neck will be fine. You could consider adding a few cloth flowers to your hair (thing the kinds you can find at places like Claire's) if you have them, though any kind of decorative hair items (like ribbons or pretty combs) will work for yukata. However, you should avoid chopsticks and pretty much anything that looks like them like the plague. Chopsticks are not used as hair accessories in Japan and are totally inappropriate for wearing with kimono and yukata.
Well I don't see why not! But first of all a Yukata is a summer kimono or a robe to lounge around in and a kimono is a heavier , more formal yukata. I mean I would wear one. I was at the Lansing Asian-American cultural museum in Hetalia Hungary Military cosplay! No one looked at me weird because it was fitting for the event. And i'm sure the same will go for you. I mean , If you have one and never wear it what's the point of having it? Well , this gives you a reason! I'm sure you will be fine so I say go ahead and do it ~
That's great, hope you will have a great time with Yukata.
I think it's good to wear something undernearth. A cami is enough I guess? I only need a cami for my top cuz it helps when I sweat. I don't usually wear anything special for the bottom but if you care, wear a longer cami, it helps you to hide some when somebody is putting it on.
Yukata is pretty much all free size. do not worry about it, they will roll you up near your stomach, and it's good. I think it's better than being toll and not enough length....
Hair styles! you can do up-dos or semi-updos! show your back of the neck, make it look like summery! Youtube videos would help on that!
yukata..i dont know about you but i CANT breathe in those things. its hot and even the yukata made for the summer cant even cool me off.
try youtube videos. its not compicated..but its a boxy outfit. you should where a cami underneath. thats it. dont wear anything thicker.
most famously in Japan to wear a yukata or any street fashion is tie your hair in a high bun and secure it with hairspray and bobby pins. then place a flower piece or something to compliment it. this is the MODERN way. the traditional way is way too complicated.
avoid any chopsticks or anything that can stick out in your hair. i dont know who made that up that it was something japanese people have with kimono in 2011, but dont do it. its common sense too. chopsticks easily fall off. no white powder and red lipstick, please.
good luck!
