Hmm, this is tricky. Well, have you ever kept a journal or a diary? Or maybe you wrote a poem once or a short story, and you liked it so much that you felt you absolutely had to share it with somebody else? You could try to think about why YOU write, and go from there.
For instance, some writters feel that they have to express something, so they write to let out some of their creative energy. Other writters write because they feel they have something important to share with the rest of the world. While others write simply because they enjoy telling stories. But I personally believe that most all writters write for themselves AND for others, because they have an inner drive to want to write, but still have to make sure to keep their readers in mind so they don't lose their audience.
Sorry it's kinda confusing, but I hope I helped at least a little bit!
Artists (at least the great artists) create art for themselves, it's a manifestation of their personal beliefs, philosophy, views, etc. They can't really understand anyone else, so why try? Sure, it's nice to have an audience, but look at most artists (Van Gogh, for instance) who didn't "make it" until they were dead. This ties into writing as well, since writing is an art-form.
1. If you think they write for themselves than they write to express their own feelings.
2. If you think they write for others it is usually to entertain or teach others but sometimes it is to persuade others.
