What is this thing? It's on the front of my tower, I'm assuming it's headphones-only because it has a symbol that looks like headphones above it. The port is light green like the audio port ojn the back of my computer.
The reason I ask is because the port on the back has recently become inoperable (speaker jack broke off inside... can't get it out and I'm afraid I've super glued it in place now anyway). Have some other speakers, and last night I tried plugging them into the headphone port on the front just to see what would happen.
But I have sound only coming from one speaker at a time. Meaning, when I don't plug the jack in fully sound comes out from one speaker, but when I push the jack all the way in sound stops coming out from that speaker but starts coming out from the other. Is this normal? Meaning, if I were to purchase headphones, they'd work properly (sound coming from both phones in the headphones)?

The headphone port on front of the tower is the same as the one in the back. They put an audio port right on the front is because if you want to plug in a headphone it easy to plug it in. ( if you didn't any hardware modification on your computer)
When you plug in a headphone or a speaker on the front audio port, it will automatically disable (that most computer does) the speaker that is connected on the back of your computer. I think it is assume that when you plug in the headphones, you only listen to headphones or any speaker you plug in on the front side.
In other word, you can only use one audio output port a time. They might be a way to listen on both audio ports at the same time, but it might require some programs.
tips:
before you buy a headphones or speaker for the front audio port, test it with a working speaker/headphones first.
Also, make sure it is fully plug in you test a speakers or headphones.

It is a normal headphone port, and sound should be coming through both speakers. Make sure you push the connector plug all the way into the port, and check that the speakers are properly connected together.
