next year, i have to take a class on religion for half of the year. it is mandatory and my school is a non-religious school. is their any way to argue against this because i am an atheist and i don't think we should be forced to learn about religion. are their any amendments or anything against this??

just dont go and fail it .. or take it and learn.. why do you not want to take it... would alittle knowledge harm you...
now if they are forcing you to believe in what they give ,, then run away and dont look back... but if it is just education i dont see the harm in that
If it is a private school, no. Most schools, however, do allow you to have your parents write a letter to have you exempted from the class.
However, I have a suggestion. Go and learn. If you are young, go to class and learn why you are an atheist. I don't know if thuis is a world religions class (which would be very interesting), theology class(which tends to teach you to reject things that are trying to be spoonfed to you by religion and incourages you to search for your own answers), or regular straight up christian religous bable.
If it is the latter, go and listen. Most Christains will tell you the reason you are an atheist is because you do not know enough about the bible, or you haven't studied the bible, or the big JC was never taught to you. This is a way to show them you did look at Christianity and it was not for you.
I am not sure. I think probably not since people who say do not believe in evolution still have to learn about in biology classes. I would say get your parents to ask the school administration if you can take another equivelent class if it is important to you. Although you may want to consider taking the class. While you may not agree with what is being taught learning about it can help you better support your own opinions. Plus with the political state of the world religions are deeply entwined in the politics these days. Having a general background in basic religions may give you a deeper understanding of world events.
Christians are forced to study atheist's ideas at school. The big bang theory and Darwinism is taught in schools all over. I don't have a problem with that, as long as they teach it as a theory and not fact. However, they do teach it as fact now. You should be open-minded enough to learn what Christianity is all about and how it came to be. It is almost like just taking a History class.
This class is not a conversion class, it is just to teach you about a subject. Take it, it is not against the constitution to teach you about religion, it is against the constitution to force you to believe in what you are being taught.
You will probably enjoy the class.
Quite the contrary, it is very important for EVERYONE to be informed on at least the major world religions. If it were a class to preach one religion, that would be a problem, but it is a very good idea to have a survey of world religions. Making it mandatory seems a bit strange, but it is always good to learn about other cultures.
As a fellow atheist, I would actually recommend taking a world religions class. I took one in college and found it interesting. Also, it gives you an opportunity to argue the atheist viewpoint. There is a big difference between teaching religion and teaching ABOUT religion.
if the class is preaching about religion then its up to the type of school. if its a private school then too bad your stuck with it. if its a public school then you dont have to. if the class is just educating you about the different types of religions out there such as what they worship, how they worship and so on and if it is a public school you could fight it and see how it turns out. its a toss up that way. if it is a private school though the government cant really force them to take that class off because the government doesnt mandate the curriculum.
Take a world religion class, espically since you are athiest you will definetally be non-judgemental about it. Even if you are not religious it is good to learn about other people's religions. And thinking more dark about it, you know all the BS they are trying to sprout out of their mouth and can shut them up with stuff from their own religion.
It sounds more like you're being lazy rather than having a true objection.
Ever heard of Sun Tzu quote, "Keep your friends close but your enemies closer?" You're making yourself a sitting duck if you don't learn about a range of things.
A true schalar will look at truth from all angels and make a decision based off that. Maybe you are not destined to be schalar, and instead be a cusodian (janitor). Even most janitors like to expand their brains instead of close them.
Exercise your "Free Will" with care.
A class is for learning, so bring the debate to your class. If they are fair minded, you will be heard.
