I have the 3.5 version. That being said, I think the 3" shotgun is better made (at least in the 870 line).
The 3.5 will help you with geese and turkey. You're just throwing maybe 10-50 more pellets at them (depending on the load) --- which isn't a bad thing for birds that are hard to put down at long ranges.
Deer it doesn't matter, the ammo reps (if honest) will recommend you just stick with the 3" b/c the 3.5 offers nothing more with a slug.
Modified choke is going to be good for goose. If you shoot anything bigger than 2's you're going to want to sight it in to make sure you shoot dead on. Bnything bigger than 2's and my gun shoots the entire pattern about 2 feet low at 25 yards.
I've killed a few turkeys with the mod choke out to 40 yards. I'd personally buy a turkey choke (not super tight though).
One bit of advice would be to stay away from the winchester 3.5" shells. Something about the rim makes them want to jam in 870's. And you will bend the "action bar lock" if you force it open and it just causes a mess that needs to go back to remington.
The 12 gauge 3.5" shell is basically the same as a 10 gauge; however, it seems to perform better. I prefer the 12 gauge 3.5" because you can use 2.75", 3", and 3.5" shells, all in the same gun. You could use it for Deer, large water fowl, turkey, pheasant, dove, boar, and even bear, elk, and moose with slugs at close range. You could even use it as a home defense gun.
I would recomend you purchase a Remington Supercell Foam Buttpad, this will greatly reduce felt recoil. You can contact Remington at (800) 243-9700. The buttpad will cost you around $12.
I bought one of these about 2 years ago (or was it 3?) Fantastic guns!
To answer the question, I only used 3 1/2" shells once, and that was for a tactical shotgun class. I wanted to "man up" and see what it was like to inflict maximum devastation. The short answer is, it hurts!
If I were a bird hunter, I would use those shells for geese and turkey. For any other use I can think of, a 3" high base shell would do just fine.
I would probably use it for waterfowl. Although you could use the gun for any number of things, deer, turkey, grouse, rabbit, pheasant, trap shooting, etc...

yes i would.. i have a savage 20GA with a super choke
on the outside of the barrel it can be changed by dialing the
choke, i'll be able to use it for deer, duck, turkey, goose
rabbit,ETC, the guy at bass pro shop set the dial at mod
Turkey, geese, ducks. I'd change it to a full choke though for turkeys.
The only time I'd use 3.5" shells would be for geese.

water fowl, upland birds, small game, deer, black bear, and some people hunt moose with shotguns
