I wouldn't put a retractable leash on any dog! They're dangerous for one thing, and when I'm walking my dogs, they wouldn't be walking 15 feet in front of me anyway, they're walking with me.
For normal walking, I prefer 6 foot leashes; I've also got 2 foot leashes strictly for training.
I'll be the first to say I prefer retractable. You don't have to have 5 different leashes of different lengths if you have a retractable. I have had mine for 11 months and it still works great. I have mini dachshunds so I use one of the smaller ones. My mom has a medium sized dog who walks very well on a leash and stays right by her side so she can use a regular leash without difficulty. I prefer to have the control to allow the dog to roam a few feet away (like when on the beach and she is playing in the waves) and to also have her right by my side. Yes, it can be difficult to hold on to for extended times and you can't just put it on your wrist, but this is easily fixed by attaching a strap to the handle that you can then secure around your wrist. Also, this will prevent you from dropping it if your dog suddenly takes off. I also don't like with regular leashes how the slash drags on the ground when your dog is not using the entire leash. This causes it to get tangled in the dog's legs and be a nuisance. I have a retractable for my 1 year old doxie and plan on getting one for my 11 week old very soon. The only way you will know which you prefer is to buy one and try it. Most stores like Petco will allow you to return it if you use it for a week and hate it.
I use all depending on what I am doing. If I am somewhere where I need control I use normal leashes. The restactable is used only when I am in areas that I don't need control. Like in a big open park or field or hiking where there are no other dogs. I use it kind of when I would like to have him off leash but not going to go that far. I take one on trips so I can take him and let him run and play and be safe in places I don't know. In places where there are cars and other people he is on a normal leash.
my best friend has 2 dogs that we walk all the time. depending on where we are going will determine which kind of leash we are using..sometimes we use a retractable leash-especially if we are walking along the beach or a place where we don't expect to meet up with other dogs. sometimes we use a hands free leash-like when we are walking on a walking trail-it helps us to keep our balance-and if we need to keep better control of the dogs we'll use a regular leash or a short leash (about 2 feet)-and we always use a head-collar (halti).
I prefer a traditional 6-foot leash. It allows me to have complete control over my dog. On the other hand, we have used a retractable leash when we're walking on the trails near our house - you can see for a long ways so if we see anyone coming, we immediately shorten it to keep control. That's really the only time I'd use one though.
I hate the retractable leashes. the gears always get corroded b/c I like to walk my dogs on the beach. I prefer a 6' leash. It is long enough to let the dog sniff a bit, but I still have complete control.
Never, ever, ever, use a retractable lead. No dog should have that much freedom, and they are extremely flimsy. I always use a nylon leash that is meant for the size dog I have, and they are generally no more than five feet long. This gives them enough lead for when we are hiking, and they have to be leashed while passing other dogs and owners. It is always good to remember that a leash is a training tool, and a means to keep your dog and everyone else safe.
I hate retractable leashes. They don't give the walker any amount of control over the dog, they are uncomfortable in your hand, and they can be pulled out of your hand if the dog runs suddenly.
I generally use a strong nylon leash with a regular collar. It gives me control, and I can choose what length I want for each of my dogs.

I use a 6 foot regular leash. Retractable ones seem dangerous, with the string. I've heard that it can lock up too.

I prefer a regular leash and think that they better teach dogs to stay at their owners side instead of running free.
